Internet Explorer 7 - Welcome to Last Year

I’d just read on Slashdot that the first public beta of Internet Explorer 7 is available for download.
I went off to Microsoft.com to download, but thought I’d check out the quick tour of new features. The “new features” here would be like an Iraqi trying to tell you how great this new “democracy” is. The […]

Nokia Open Source Python for Series 60

Nokia have announced that they are going to release the source code for their Symbian Series 60 Python.
This is a further boost to the take up of Python. Of course, we may see nothing for a while, but this can only make Python better or able to reach more mobile platforms.

Idea: OpenOffice.org source identification

I recently had a conversation with Andy Oram (http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/au/36) regarding how users can know what software another user can use. Andy’s post on it is here.
The issue is particularly around the question of .doc files created with OpenOffice.org (OOo) Writer. Many OpenOffice.org Writer users are creating .doc files to send to other people, which may […]

The False Hope of GUI Designers

I was reading this week about Microsoft’s new XAML technology, Sparkle, and it got me thinking about GUI design tools, object orientation and programming in general. This is not about IDEs. Tools which provide management, editing, debugging and cross-referencing can be very useful.
One of the dangers with GUI design tools is that they give a […]

Python Hosting

If anyone’s reading this, can you recommend a Python host, preferably in the UK?
The companies I can see are not those that I really want to use.

USB Mousepad

I’ve recently discovered what seems a very sensible invention - a combined USB hub and mousepad in the Google store. Once discovered, I then went hunting for the cheapest, and found that the Google store one is the cheapest at the price of £9.99.

Python and XUL - a symbiotic partnership

I’ve been reading what’s upcoming in Firefox (via the Roadmap Scratchpad) and one of the most interesting items to me is the integration of Python as an additional option for XUL software development. The current plan is early 2007.
I see this working to help both Firefox and Python.
From the Firefox side, a lot of developers don’t […]

Space Wallpapers

Ken McConnell gave me a headsup to the spacewallpapers.net site which features imagery from NASA as well as some drawn artwork.

Convention over Configuration

I’ve just started reading Dave Thomas’ Agile Web Development With Rails and what strikes me as my favourite point about Ruby on Rails is the viewpoint of "Convention over Configuration".
This idea is nothing new, but I’m glad to see that it’s being done for the web. I used a 4GL mainframe tool in 1986 called Application […]

Crucial - Memory Suppliers

If I had to choose a single online retailer, regardless of market, the answer would be Crucial Technology, the memory people.
No-one else has given me the 100+% satisfaction that they do.
Here’s why

Memory selector. As long as you know your motherboard/camera type, Crucial can tell you what is compatible. Everything has worked perfectly. They also provide […]
