Ubuntu Dual Boot Running

So, following on from my article about first look at Ubuntu Linux, my free* Ubuntu CDs arrived.

The disc pack comprised of 2 discs - a Live CD and an Install CD.

So, I backed up my system and prepared to install.

I had an old drive in my PC that was unused, so I installed Ubuntu on there. The installation was straightforward and I then tried switching the boot disk to that drive and nothing happened.

I then tried switching to the drive running the bootloader (grub) and that failed too.

So, I had a look around and determined that the problem was that my drive was not what linux thought was hd0. I’m sure there’s a better way of doing this, but instead, I just added Ubuntu with a new partition to the primary drive, rebooted and hey presto, it’s all booting and working quite well

Give it a  go. The tools are now reasonably decent.

* Yes, that is correct. You can get free as in catch-free, cost-free, postage-free CDs from https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
