Picasa on Ubuntu 2

I decided to check out Picasa on Ubuntu in some more detail, and took some photos, and then picked one and applied the B&W filter, and exported them. Worked just fine and dandy, detecting the card from the camera and proceeding with it.

Picasa on Ubuntu

I like free, open source software, but I don’t view it with zealotry. I like Ubuntu a lot, and respect that they believe in everything being free as in beer, free as in freedom.
But I’ll use what I like.
Which brings me to Picasa, Google’s excellent photo manager. It’s what I use on Windows for organising […]

Hello “Social Media”

The whole O’Reilly controversy over a conference using their trademark (which is already reasonably common currency) means that the trademark is now dead. I’m being cryptic, because I’m refusing to use the term, but this article should clue you in.
The term that Tim O’Reilly likes to regularly use is now toast. I’ve talked to friends […]

Swindon Techs/Bloggers Meetup

I’m trying to set up a monthly event (probably 1st Wednesday of the month) for people involved in blogging, tech, open source software, graphic design, web design and all that as a social meet-up, probably somewhere like Wood Street. The idea is that it will be a no agenda, informal gathering.
If you’re involved in any of […]

No Release? Buy it up!

According to the Telegraph, a fan of the TV series Joking Apart has bought the rights and is releasing it himself. Sounds good.
Is there anyone out there who would like to do the same thing with the Absolutely? I loved that series, and it wouldn’t be dated. It’s not out on DVD, which means that […]

Hutton Report Signings

I try to avoid getting into politics directly here, but Iain Dale has passed on a story that just made me feel a little sick.
It turns out that the Labour Party have been selling copies of the Hutton report signed by Cherie Blair and Alistair Campbell at party fund raisers.
I’m revolted that people can think […]

Opera Mini

Simon Willison has switched me on to the excellent Opera Mini 2.0. It’s a free browser for a phone that pre-processes content on a remote server to the browser, cutting down traffic and time. It’s really quick on my Nokia 6680.
I also like the way it formats the pages, and it’s much easier to read than […]

Los Gatos, Swindon

Had a social with Sean Wilson of Money Swindon last night, on his recommendation of the Los Gatos tapas restaurants on Wood Street, Swindon.
Seemed like a good place. Good atmosphere and some nice nibbles. My chat with the owner was very encouraging. He’s obviously interested in doing it right with decent ingredients.

Seattle

I was talking with a friend last night about how to get the town of Swindon "on the map", and we were talking about how the city of Seattle had managed to become one of the coolest cities on the planet.
What I don’t understand is what was the catalyst.
It seems to me that there were […]
