Seattle

I was talking with a friend last night about how to get the town of Swindon "on the map", and we were talking about how the city of Seattle had managed to become one of the coolest cities on the planet.
What I don’t understand is what was the catalyst.
It seems to me that there were 3 things that have "made" Seattle:-
- "Grunge" music (Nirvana, Pearl Jam)
- Microsoft
- Starbucks
Was there a single event that stimulated all this happening, or was it just an accident? If anyone knows, I’d like to hear.
I have never been there - but I heard some things that preceded the three hits that you mentioned.
I do know people that go to Seattle to climb the mountains.
I hear that Seattle coffee houses served better coffee than Starbucks.
Before Microsoft there were cellular phones: McCaw spawned AT&T Mobile, Nextel and T-Mobile.
I also hear that Bristol is pretty cool too - imdb (from Seattle) have a base in Bristol.
