First Thoughts on the Apple MacBook

Looking for a replacement laptop, and the MacBook looks interesting as an alternative. I prefer Unix-based over Windows-based, but I’d rather get on with it than have to configure Linux (particularly for wireless).
Lots of plusses. The price is good (<£750),  it’s a good design, dual-boots windows and can do all the Unix goodness fast enough. […]

Ubuntu Dapper Update

As a followup to my original Ubuntu Dapper post here, I’ve done an update to the latest version of the beta, known as Flight 8 (very easy, just click the update, or get into your whole sudo apt-get bad self).
The networking is working again, and stability is much better.
Looking forward to the full live release […]

Console Search Trends

Using Google’s new Google Trends, I decided to do an analysis of the next generation consoles:-

Sony Playstation 3
Microsoft XBox 360
Nintendo Wii

Thankfully, the console names keep it quite simple. I have however considered that some people might search for PS3 instead of Playstation 3, and that some people will have searched on "Nintendo Revolution".
So, the search […]

mtraffic

Tom Dyson has developed an application using the BBC Backstage data and taken a different approach to my fetch M4 application for getting the results.
Where my application is a Python module which runs locally and processes the BBC data, Tom gives a webserver which pre-processes the results.
Tom’s also gives a lot of other benefits, like […]

Revolution vs Wii

The naming of Nintendo’s console as Wii and not Revolution has upset some gamers. "Wii"? Are you joking?
Something I predicted to a friend a few days ago was that if it was a good enough console, then no-one would care about the name. And based on how much positive feedback Nintendo have received, it looks like […]

Political Cinema

You can’t seem to move for another documentary movie appearing at the cinema. The new kid on the block is Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, following films like Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11 and SuperSize Me. There’s also an Enron movie doing the rounds.
The rise of these films has been something of a […]

Google wants special treatment in IE?

I’ve read an article today on Zdnet where Steve Ballmer of Microsoft is saying that Google wants special treatment in IE. Link
"Google wants us to prompt the users to change the defaults. They want to see a list of search providers, with the No. 1 search provider listed first," said Ballmer.
If any readers can find […]

Friday Fun: Fastr

Someone has developed a game based on content uploaded to Flickr. You get presented with a number of images and you have to guess what the tag is that all the images are related to. As each image is revealed, it tells you a little more.
You also play a number of other players, so you can compare […]

Four Second Fury

A great, high-octane Flash game that will delight retro gamers:-

Ubuntu Dapper Trial

I’ve recently updated my Ubuntu dual boot to the new Ubuntu Dapper Drake. This is beta software, and my advice to anyone who relies on Ubuntu for work is to test it on a non-vital machine before upgrading. For me, it’s not a beta that’s stable enough yet. Fortunately, I can cope with it being […]
