Good Restaurants=Home Made Ice-Cream

How do you tell a good place to eat, before you go?

I was thinking about the pubs/restaurants that I really like. The ones that I’ll travel 20-30 miles to go and eat in. The advice I was once given was that you should look for places not with laminated menus, but something handwritten or on a blackboard.

The problem is that large marketing-led pub chains caught on to this, and put their own blackboards up.

Then it struck me. The one thing that I’ve found is that everywhere I’ve eaten that makes their own ice cream has been excellent. Which isn’t to say that I’ll choose their ice cream, but I think it’s symbolic.

The last thing that pubs and restaurants will produce themselves is ice cream. It also generally means that they’ve mastered everything else first.
