Risky Living
From a friend, Drakkenmaw:
"It’s a shame that people can’t grasp that being a target of Islamist terrorist cells is as frightening as having Steven Hawking tell you he’s going to beat the shiat out of you. Sure, it’s possible it might happen - I imagine that chair could indeed bruise your legs in a nasty way - but the chances of it actually occurring to you are so microscopic that you’d be better off just accepting it as one of the many risks associated with life and get along with your existence."
There are reasonable measures that can be taken to ensure people’s safety. Scanning people for bombs, guns, explosives, etc are good. The key thing about them is that it’s very hard to justify why you’d need to carry a lump of semtex or a machete onto a plane.
The problem with the recent measures is that they get in the way of people living. They take away people’s laptops and books in the name of safety.
We have to be careful that in our attempts to keep people safe, we don’t lose sight of our attempts to live.
I’m glad to see somebody else saying this. We’ve developed a cultural ethos that says that goading each other to panic is the responsible and caring thing to do.
Have you seen this paper? It’s pretty good…
