Proprietary Software Not All Bad

I’ve just finished reading an article in Newsforge called
Why proprietary software is dangerous for business-critical applications.

Ideally, a business is best served by open source software. It allows for complete freedom. However, there are not open source applications that meet every business need or offer the levels of support that businesses require.

One lesson that should be learnt from the article is to consider whether the formats of the data in the system are open. If the system has a database, do you understand the formats? Could you hire a developer to pull the data out to put into another system?

It’s not that proprietary software is bad, it’s proprietary formats that are the problem. You can have proprietary software using open data formats.
