Reading Tim Worstall’s piece on Labour party finances, I was reminded of a skill that I have that I don’t advertise much: I can organise a pissup in a brewery.

For a short time I was involved in t’committee of Swindon CAMRA in the role of Social Secretary, which involved organising pissups in breweries.  Of the 3 I organised, 2 went just great, and 1 was problematic (the coach broke down on the way).

The problem with the statement "they couldn’t organise a pissup in a brewery" is that from experience, I’d consider such organisation as beyond them. Organising a pissup in a brewery is more complex than people imagine. You need to book the brewery, get a coach, get the punters, get them to pay, tell them where to meet etc.

I’d rather stick to a metaphor like putting their shoes on the right feet.
