Favourite Things about Paris

Following a discussion about Rodin over at Ellee Seymour’s place, I’ve decided to do a quick brain dump of some of my favourite things about Paris.

  • Rodin Museum. Over on the left bank, not too heavily visited and quite compact for a museum. The gardens are lovely too.
  • The Musee D’Orsay. Great impressionist art in the setting of the old d’Orsay railway station.
  • The Orangerie. Panoramic paintings by Monet. Very chilled.
  • Eiffel Tower. Yes, obvious, but I like it. I’ve been advised to visit at night. Last time we tried, the metro were on strike, so we went the next day.
  • Grande Arche at La Defense.
  • Maison Berthillon. Simply the best ice cream I’ve ever bought.
  • Shopping. Galleries Lafayette, Samaritaine, and also just ambling around shops in St-Germain. Apparantly the cafe at the top of Samaritaine is worth a visit for the view (I went when it was closed!).
  • The Luxembourg Gardens. Also on the left bank.

Contrary to some belief, I’ve never found Paris to be too pricey. Rooms at weekends are reasonably priced, as is dining if you avoid the tourist areas. Transport and museums are all quite reasonable.

  1. Right, I’m going to find my passport and head straight off to Paris, there are so many places here on my list. I remember visiting Paris with my French class and we had dinner in a skyscaper in the middle of a shopping centre with beautiful panoramic views of the city, it was stunning.

What I love most about Paris are the avenues, the squares with fountains, the little streets, its mix of new and old buildings, its brave architecture, its variety of restaurants and cafes, and, most of all, people watching…

  2. Montparnasse Tower?

Some people recommend it because in summer it’s not as busy as the Tour Eiffel. It’s the tallest "building" in France (Tour Eiffel is higher, but not really a "building").
