J Spaceman comes to Salisbury

This journal isn’t turning into a music column, but this is also worthy of mention.
The marvellous J Spaceman (ex Spacemen 3, now Spiritualized) is playing Salisbury Arts Centre on the 20th October 06. Some new tracks, some old Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized tracks. He’s going to have backing of a string quartet and gospel choir. […]

Swindon Oxjam

** Warning. There are links to MySpace pages from this entry. Brace yourself for the visual feast that awaits. **
There are a number of events being organised around the country under the title of Oxjam, which is going to give a load of money to Oxfam.
One of the events is in Swindon and being organised […]

Wordpress Development News

I’m currently working on a site in Wordpress for someone, and as part of it, I want to have menus with submenus like:-
Category    Page    Page
Category    Page
without Category also having a link. I’ve discovered that Wordpress stores posts and pages in the same table, which means there’s a category there, although it’s not used for […]

Video Transcoding Question

Does anyone know a way to transcode video from Flash Video into something like mov or avi?
I’ve made a little video clip that shows new Wordpress users how to write a post. I made the video using the excellent Wink which can generate as Flash video. The problem is that in order to put the […]

Microsoft Zune and Closed Formats

Some time ago, Microsoft came up with a program called PlaysForSure, the idea being that people could buy a device and know that they could buy protected content from certain other places, and that that content would work.
So, what’s strange is that Microsoft’s new player, the Zune, apparantly isn’t going to support PlaysForSure. So, Microsoft’s […]

Programming Tests

I had to do a couple today with Expert Rating for a client, one in ASP.NET/SQL Server and the other in XHTML. I wasn’t so sure on the XHTML one (ASP.NET does most of the HTML generation legwork), but passed it, so I’m feeling a lot more confident about that.
I still believe that these things […]

New Conservative Logo

When I saw the logo on Iain Dale’s Weblog, I assumed that it was some sort of joke. That some rumour had gone around and a wag had mocked something up for him.
I can’t believe that someone paid good money for something like that.
Here’s my company logo. I got it in exchange for setting […]

All the way to the IOD

Sean Wilson and I took a trip to the IOD for one of their fortnightly social evenings. It’s Bristol, which means a trek, but conversations with Sean and Bend Sinister made the time pass nicely.
It was a really good evening spent talking to some really pleasant and interesting people about their businesses and plans, and […]

Voting Machines

Re: Montgomery to Extend Voting Hours After Election Glitches
A bunch of voting machines wouldn’t work, so voters had to come back later. That’s bad design.
I’m not impressed with the idea of voting machines. It seems to me that it’s a risky solution with very little benefit.
Paper and pencil works just fine. You don’t need operators […]

The New Old Star Wars DVD

There’s more than enough blogging about the merits of certain version of Star Wars. So, in brief. If you prefer the pre-special edition, you’ll be happy. Reasonable transfer but not much clean up compared to VHS Widescreen editions. Stereo sound.
I just wish I’d never seen Vadar Sessions.
