Cooking in Schools

I was listening to Prue Leith on Radio 4’s PM show talking about how important it is for children to be taught cooking in schools (along with various other health groups).

Only trouble is that it doesn’t really add up. I know plenty of people who were taught cooking at school and they don’t cook much now.

The real reason that people cook less today is because 30 years ago they had no choice but to prepare a meal (or buy fish and chips). Around 1% of US households had a microwave in 1975, which is not enough to sustain a ready-meal industry that we have today.

A lot of people simply don’t like cooking or sitting down and eating. They view it as something to get through to get onto the things they do enjoy. They’d rather be out at the pub than sitting down for a dinner party. 30 years ago they had to do it, but today they don’t. That’s the difference.
