Nurses Can’t Find a Job

Most New Nurses Still Job Hunting

Of the 507 newly-qualified nurses questioned by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), 71% were still searching for a job at the starting level.

Hasn’t the mantra until recently been that there’s shortages (of beds - which really means people looking after beds) and so we needed to train a whole lot more? But we’re spending money training people who then can’t put those skills to use. Great.

And it’s not like we, the people who paid for this training are going to see any advantages. At least when someone gets a BSc in Computer Studies, you increase the pool in the free market of computer services, and hence, the rates drop overall. The NHS has some good old fashioned collective bargaining going on, which means that a hospital manager can’t rub his hands with glee at the amount of talent that he can hire at lower rates, seeing how there’s so much supply in the market. Which again, wouldn’t be a problem, except that the NHS is also a monopoly in terms of funding, so it’s not like they can go out of business for being overpriced.

  1. What do you think about his plans to somehow have one base for council payments and a post office counter which I have mentioned today?

  2. Ellee,

Ideas like that should be explored. There have been suggestions to allow pubs to also operate as Post Offices.
