The EU Makes You Wait for the PS3

Last week, the UK High Court ruled that Lik-Sang could not sell Sony PSPs into the UK, even though they were selling direct from Hong Kong. Under EU law, if you want to sell something into the EU with a trademark, you need the trademark holder’s consent.

In other words, even though you’ve bought it from someone, it’s not really your property.

One of the services that Lik-Sang were going to provide was grey importing of the long-awaited PS3. But as a result of this decision, Lik-Sang have now decided to cease trading. So, a lot of hardcore gamers are just going to have to wait now. Bet they’re real happy with the government for doing this.

Of course, Sony only fought the case to protect consumers…"Ultimately, we’re trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera". So, if a Japanese person comes to the UK, then they really shouldn’t use it here, because of safety risks? Yeah. Right.
