What are Novell Doing???

Last week, Novell and Microsoft struck a "patent cooperation deal". It’s quite puzzling.

One thing is the question of Mono, the open .net implementation. If you’re so worried about getting sued by a particular company, why pursue a course of reimplementing a technology that they’ve designed? Secondly, why are Novell so worried about it? As far as I know, the implementations of Mono are few and far between.

It’s never going to have the support that Microsoft gives .net on Windows, and it’s never going to be truly compatible with the Windows version, because .net has a Windows-specific functionality.

Seriously, drop it, and get with the people doing work improving the truly open technologies. Something you can own and be part of, where you influence direction and don’t have to worry so much about getting sued.

At least I went with Ubuntu.

  1. I’m sorry, I’m afraid I don’t know what a Mono is. Thanks for your sharp eyed proof reading, btw.

  2. I keep thinking that I should set up multiple blogs. One for each of the following:-

    1. Arts (music, opera and cinema)
    2. Politics
    3. Food
    4. Coffee
    5. Tech stuff

Maybe this will become my tech stuff blog, and I’ll give the others some other names.

    What do you think?

(and do you want an explanation of Mono ;) )
