I’d like my lawyer, Dave…
Robots Could Demand Legal Rights
The paper says a "monumental shift" could occur if robots develop to the point where they can reproduce, improve themselves or develop artificial intelligence.
The research suggests that at some point in the next 20 to 50 years robots could be granted rights.
If this happened, the report says, the robots would have certain responsibilities such as voting, the obligation to pay taxes, and perhaps serving compulsory military service.
The government is commissioning papers on the rights of AI creations? Why not add warp drive, teleportation, time travel and invisibility in there too?
If we ever get a HAL or T-1000 (and with the current state of AI, these are just dreams), then maybe these things deserve debate. Until then, why not get some scientists looking into something useful.
Have you forgotten about Bladerunner and I Robot? Rights were very much an issue there.
By the way, Tim, why must I go through the tedium every single time I visit here of manually typing in every last letter in the official data above?
James,
True. I’m not questioning that having a debate on such things is interesting, just whether having government funding it is a higher priority than body armour.
On the 2nd point, it’s not an issue to me. What browser setup are you using.
