Novel Uses for Your Hands

I like mnemonic and memory tricks. Such as Many Volcanoes Erupt Mouldy Jam, Smells Under Noses Pong as a way to remember the order of the planets.
There are two hand tricks. One I was reminded of earlier, and one I’ve just discovered. The first is the 9 times table trick. To calculate 9×3, drop your […]

paint.net

I’m more of a developer than a designer, so my needs for graphics tools are limited. It’s mostly resizing, making a large text image and perhaps a little image retouching. I don’t need Photoshop, and I find GIMP unfriendly.
So, I’m glad I came across Paint.net. It’s a Windows-based image manipulation tool that runs on Windows […]

Apartment Carabeo

I’ve built a small website for a friend for his holiday apartment in Nerja in Southern Spain. It’s a 2-bed apartment and there’s still availabiility. The website address is http://www.carabeo.co.uk.
The site was built using Wordpress, generally considered more as a blogging platform, but it serves well as a site building platform, especially when there is […]

Clarinet Request

I’m keen to learn to play the clarinet, and I’m wondering if any readers have one that they’re doing nothing with, or if they know one for sale.
I want to get a reasonable instrument. Not very cheap, nor very expensive, but something that I can play a decent note on.
Let me know if you can […]

100 minutes with Django

A few weeks ago, I sat down and spent about 75 minutes watching a video presentation about Django by Jacob-Kaplan Moss. In case you don’t click the link, it’s a Google TechTalks presentation called "django: Web Development for Perfectionists with Deadlines". There’s a moment in the presentation where Jacob describes it as (I recall) "stupidly […]

Django Project

The third language that I learnt to program in was a strange creature called Application Master. It was part of ICL’s 4GL system called Quickbuild.
This was something like 17 years ago, it was mainframe based and it had limitations of an 80×24 dumb terminal.
But what was striking about it, even now is just how fast […]

Oxford Geeknights

Those nice people at Torchbox are organising a Geeknight in Oxford on February 7th for all sorts of local people (Swindon is local, I guess) involved in web design and development.
It looks like a lot of fun…

The Purton Underwear Mystery

Police Investigate the Case of the Mysterious Knickers
A PERPLEXING mystery, which might be more at home in a Benny Hill sketch, is befuddling police officers in Purton. For the past four months items of frilly lingerie have been turning up in the hedges, garden walls and road signs in a country lane in the […]

Smashing Magazine

By co-incidence, I was reading Digg, when I saw a link to Smashing Magazine about some nice free fonts, and then I noticed Simon Collison linking to their article on 53 CSS techniques (which are very groovy).
I had a look around. Looks good. Have a look:-

Slight Redesign

I’ve gone for a new theme, which Squarespace have added, which I think is just lovely.
The bloggers list is reorganised, and I’m shifting things around.
If you’re in designers and want to be in geeks, or vice versa, let me know. Both are equal in my eyes.
