Chart Pondering and The Beatles

A few weeks ago, Skuds had a ponder about the charts. In particular, the changes in the system that means that there is no requirement for physical product to be sold:-

if someone downloads, say, the new Amy Winehouse album which includes a couple of singles in the charts, would that count as one sale for each of the singles? Does it make a difference if you download a track as part of an album or on its own? If you download an album track-by-track is it treated differently to downloading the whole album as a package?

My guess is that that’s how they work it.

I’ve been pondering for a few weeks about great album tracks that were never singles. The Beatles had quite a few, and with their arrival on iTunes, perhaps we’ll see some of them enter the chart. None of Sgt Peppers was released as singles, so perhaps we’ll see With a Little Help From My Friends, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, A Day in the Life, When I’m 64 or She’s Leaving Home enter. Or perhaps Here Comes the Sun from Abbey Road.

  1. Maybe the memory’s playing tricks but I thought the airplay Sergeant Peopper’s title track got was the shorter single version but I can’t remember the B side, it’s true.
