Harold Russell, a wartime amputee in Best Years of Our Lives (1946). He was given an Honorary Oscar for "for bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans through his appearance", as the academy thought that he wouldn’t win the competitive award.

3. Which director didn’t collect his Oscar in person because he was playing clarinet that night?

Woody Allen. 

4. What is the only animated movie to have received a nomination for best film?

Beauty and the Beast (1991). There is now a special Best Animated Movie category, although this doesn’t mean that a movie can’t also win Best Picture. 

5. Of the following directors, who has won the most oscars? Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman or Alfred Hitchcock?

Alfred Hitchcock, who has an honorary oscar, although in terms of best directing, none of them have won one.

6. Who is the only actor/actress to have won an oscar portraying a previous oscar winner?

Cate Blanchett won best supporting actress for The Aviator, in which she played Katherine Hepburn. 

7.  What was the last black-and-white film to win the Best Picture oscar?

Schindler’s List, although it has a small amount of colour. The last completely black and white winner was The Apartment.

8. Who is the only American actress in this year’s nominees?

The perenial Meryl Streep.
