Dell and Linux

Dell have announced that they intend to offer greater Linux support on their desktop lines. This is great news.
I’m currently running Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron Laptop, and it runs well. But it took some tweaking, and buying of a new wireless card to get it to work. When the laptop finally gives up the […]

Ubuntu Feisty Beta RALINK problems

I’ve been running Ubuntu Feisty for a week or so now, and thought I’d get the first beta. I was expecting a straightforward install.
In the beta, something called network manager has been added. This is a good addition, except that it’s incompatible with the RALINK chipset drivers (which I use).
If you’re getting problems with RALINK, […]

Bigger Flash Drives

There’s an interesting story on Gizmodo about 32GB Flash Drives that will run in a laptop, presumably either replacing the existing hard drive, or perhaps we’ll see 2 drives in laptops - one flash, one normal.
For those that aren’t familiar with the difference between Flash and Hard Drive storage, there are 3 good reasons for going […]

Acronis Disk Director

I’m now running Acronis Disk Director, and it’s a very good bit of software. Recommended.

University…

What about the ones who don’t apply?
If we do not do more to engage this talent, we are going to end up with the “meritocracy” that Michael Young envisaged in 1958. He coined the phrase as a warning, not nirvana. He applauded the appointment of individuals to jobs on merit. But […]

Firefox Session Restore

I really like Firefox, but I get annoyed by the option to restore a session after a crash. I never want this - I always want a fresh session.
I found out how to switch off the restore. I could write it all up here, but someone’s done it already : link

E-Petition to Free Government Data

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/freegovdata/
I’ve set up an e-petition with regards to government data. In essence, I’m petitioning for that data which has already been produced by and for the government to be made freely available. So, where the government currently sells information such as the electoral role, DVLA information and postcodes, the information will be available on an […]

Gliffy: Diagrams on the Web

I used to use Microsoft Visio for my diagramming needs. It’s a brilliant tool, but most of my independent client work doesn’t require UML documentation - it’s more business orientated.
However, I do need diagrams occassionally, and I make a trade-off and use a drawing package (it’s much cheaper than buying Visio).
It looks like there’s a […]

Oxford Geek Nights 2

Looks like those nice Torchbox people are doing another Oxford Geek Nights on 11th April. Considering how good the last one was, if you’re in the Oxford area and interested in cool technology being built by people, I recommend it.
