Poor Memory

Just tried to fit a 1GB stick of memory into my PC, and it didn’t recognise it as being there. The motherboard supports it, and Crucial claim it should work. Maybe it’s just a duff bit of memory.
Weird thing is that it’s destabilised my system to the point where it only worked after reseating the memory.
Perhaps I need to (gulp) rebuild the machine from scratch.
