Bigger Flash Drives
Posted on March 24th, 2007 by Tim Almond
There’s an interesting story on Gizmodo about 32GB Flash Drives that will run in a laptop, presumably either replacing the existing hard drive, or perhaps we’ll see 2 drives in laptops - one flash, one normal.
For those that aren’t familiar with the difference between Flash and Hard Drive storage, there are 3 good reasons for going Flash.
- Faster. Hard Drives spin whilst a magnetic disk whilst a head reads and writes data. Flash memory is a slower variety of the onboard memory, but still much faster than a hard drive.
- Power. Solid state drives mean no motor spinning sapping your battery.
- Noise. It will run noiseless (although drives have in recent years improved considerably in this area).
The drives are going to be about £200 when they come out, which is pricey for a 32GB drive. But expect them to come down quite quickly. In a year or two, they’ll probably be fitted as standard on higher spec machines.
