Google MyMaps
I’ve just tried out Google’s new MyMaps feature that’s part of Google Maps. I was trying it because my own attempts at creating a custom map were time consuming - working out the co-ordinates and then hand coding them.
MyMaps gives you a browser interface where you can plot points of interest, draw lines and all that. It works very well for that. You can also link to the map, and export the map into KML format. KML files can be used by Google Earth for plotting map information (there was a very nice file produced for last year’s Tour De France).
The only thing that’s missing, and it’s a biggie for me, is the ability to embed the map. Which means that using it for making your own blog maps is a bit limited. I think I’ll be sticking to the Javascript.
