The White Heat of Voting Technology

From The Adver
A breakdown in the wireless voting system meant electronic results were delivered two hours late. Earlier today the connectivity system, a secure server that collects on-line votes, failed completely at polling stations in Covingham and The Lawns.
That’s progress for you. It probably took a man with a van about 10 minutes to deliver the polling boxes full of paper votes to The Oasis from The Lawns.
IT seems to get the blame for everything these days, they obviously needed your expertise Tim. I hope the results were good for us in your area.
Ellee,
They don’t need me. They need paper ballots.
As well as being a software developer, I’m also fascinated by information processes (and business processes more generally). I don’t believe in recommended a computer solution just because it’s a computer solution. If paper and pen works better, that’s what I recommend.
I have yet to be convinced of the argument for computer voting systems. All the risks of paper voting (and some) with little payoff.
Tim, this is why I’m the sworn enemy of technology [in the form of the French TGV, for example]. Give me a coach and six any day.
James,
The TGV is quite a technical marvel, but it also costs the French taxpayer a huge amount of money.
