Ubuntu Linux on a Thinkpad T41
Posted on August 23rd, 2007 by Tim Almond
I recently bought an old Thinkpad T41 to run Linux. I don’t need a particularly powerful machine for Linux needs, but my Dell laptop had a power supply that was glowing a little too hot for me to be comfortable.
Here’s the installation instructions in full:-
- Download the ISO image from the Ubuntu Linux website.
- Insert blank CD into PC.
- Burn image to CD using Nero or other burner.
- Eject burnt CD.
- Boot up the Thinkpad, insert the burnt CD, choose F12 and select boot from CD.
- Ubuntu boots in “live CD” mode.
- Choose “install”. Follow the instructions for language, country, keyboard, timezone, user details and select to overwrite the partition (if you want dual-boot, ask someone else).
- When “Copying Files” comes up, make a cup of tea or coffee. It takes a few minutes.
- When it tells you to reboot, eject the disk and reboot.
- Log-in, find your wireless network and off you go.
For me, I think the whole process took something like 40 minutes, and was completely hassle-free. All devices work nice. After which, I had a fully working computer capable of web browsing and office applications.
I am about to do an install of Ubuntu 8.04 on my “new” IBM T41.
What version of Ubuntu did you use here. Ought I do the same or do you think I’ll be as hassle free with 8.04 as you were on yours.
I am completely new at this and not a computer wizard.
Thanks.
