I generally avoid Today, preferring the genteel humour of Terry Wogan on radio 2, but sometimes, when there’s some pop country comes on, I get bored and start surfing around the stations, frequently ending up at Radio 4’s Today programme.

Despite elements of the press marketing him as a welsh terrier, John Humphreys is nothing of the sort. Unlike the welsh terrier, he never gets his quarry.

I’ve heard 2 interviews with Gordon Brown where Humphreys was totally outclassed. Each good question had a good answer from Brown, and nothing to follow up from Humphreys. This isn’t just Brown. Every politician outsmarts him. His grasp on politics seems to be by surfing the headlines for the latest news memes, which he throws into the interviews. His attacks are too direct to be effective, and his interviewees are better prepared than he is (Eddie Mair on PM is far more cunning).
