Facebook Beacon and Privacy
I visited the rather good Kongregate website today to have a game of bloons.
A few minutes later, a popup appeared telling me that my Facebook profile had been updated with an entry saying that I’m playing Bloons.
I don’t really care that anyone knows that I’m playing Bloons. It’s just that I didn’t tell Kongregate that they could tell Facebook. I don’t even have a Kongregate account.
Reading this piece, there are 40-odd companies using Beacon including some who really should know better, like eBay. Just to see what it’s doing, I checked out this Radiant Core article that deconstructed the code. It’s an ugly kludge that uses an iFrame and Javascript (hence it can even send details if I’m not signed up to Kongregate).
Check the Radiant Core article, and switch this crap off.
