The Return of the Ring

Normally, I don’t have the time for such things, but I was tucked up in bed with a cold yesterday, and I decided to watch the Appendices to Peter Jackson’s Return of the King. These are the 2 extra DVDs that make up the 4 disc edition. Mostly, it was in-depth material into the whole process of making the movies (which I’m quite fascinated by). In particular, there was a piece about some software called Massive.

This was really fascinating - software that could be used to simulate crowd behaviour by having thousands of autonomous agents, each of which are acting independently according to certain behaviour rules which then make up something that looks like a real group behaviour. In other words, some of the scenes weren’t so much animated as generated by a computer according to certain rules.

If you’re a geek and you haven’t watched the Appendices, scan through them and find this sequence.
