Wonked Out
I was listening to the radio this evening reporting about Rudy Guiliani’s strategy for Florida, and started to wonder just how many people in the UK actually give 2 hoots about the US primaries.
I consider myself something of a wonk. I read quite dense political articles on the net, bloggers like Tim Worstall, Dizzy, Croydonian, Devil’s Kitchen, Fark, the odd slice of Iain Dale, Ellee Seymour, most of the writers in the Times, Telegraph and the crazies on Comment is Free.
If I can’t take any interest in what seems to be near-daily coverage of this, what does a non-wonk make of it?
This isn’t intended to suggest that being insular and avoiding what’s outside your front door is a good thing. Just that these particular events are an irrelevance at this stage for people in the UK. You can’t vote for the candidates, and until one of them gets into the White House, it doesn’t affect the average Briton.
I really have to wonder about the priority of the news coverage of this issue. I’m sure there are more interesting, more important stories than these for most people.
