Chateau Labegorce 1998

Opened a bottle of this excellent Margaux last night. Lots of lovely creamy fruit and vanilla tones. Tannin levels good.
However, if you’ve got one, leave it for another year or two, when I think it will be at its best. I’ve still got one left!

St Pancras

I stumbled across an article about St Pancras station today, and I’m puzzled by something written in it:-
St Pancras was chosen as an international terminus in part because it is a few minutes’ walk from King’s Cross station which has connections to Edinburgh, Newcastle and the east coast as well as six London Underground lines.
Who […]

Propaganda

On the europop theme, I was going to post the video of Propaganda’s Duel, when I stumbled across this terrific 2004 live performance of Dr Mabuse. I’m now trying to track down the DVD of the concert…

Front 242

In my teenage years, I used to read the Melody Maker, and one of the bands that they’d mention were Front 242, an electronic band from Belgium.
At the time, I never heard them, but a post by Croydonian got me googling, and I came across this mighty track.

(I’m now looking for other great Euro tracks)

Alan Bennett on Private Schools

He said: “It was the first time I ever came across boys from public school. They were so confident. We were timid grammar school boys but they were very much at ease.”
“They were just louts, but I also realised that they had been better taught than I had. I thought that was unfair when I […]

Subdomain Hosting

I recently had to set up some domains, and they had to have subdomains.
I normally use 1and1 for my domains, and they’re fine, but they have a weird rule about subdomains. It doesn’t matter how many domains you have on your account, you only get 5 subdomains. 5 per domain I can understand, but 5, […]

Fibre in the Sewers

From the BBC
The UK’s first “fibre town” could go online in the autumn, delivering speeds of about 100Mbps (megabits per second) to consumers’ homes.
Fibre firm H2O provides super-fast broadband via the sewers and either Bournemouth, Northampton or Dundee will be offered the service first.
Make it Swindon, and I’ll give up a kidney.

Version Targetting makes a whole load of sense

This week, Microsoft announced a new feature that’s going into IE8, which seems to be causing a stir amongst web developers.
The idea is that by putting in a meta tag on an HTML page, you can tell it which version of Internet Explorer you’d like it to be rendered like (or by not putting it […]

Scrabulous

I’ve gone off Facebook in recent months, but one of the things I’ve enjoyed about it is Scrabulous. I really like playing Scrabble, and it’s great to get to play some people online at it - particularly as it’s possible to make a move whenever I want.
It’s now reported that the makers of Scrabble have […]

It’s Too Orangey For Crows

Until I was playing scrabulous today, I had no idea that Kia Ora was a maori greeting meaning “hello”.
For anyone too young to understand the headline:-
