Not Fit To Be King

I am a republican (in the british sense). That’s not to say that I have a problem with the current Queen (opinion is high from everyone who’s met her), nor do I have a problem with the cost (which probably costs less than tourism). I just don’t believe in the idea of hereditary power as something that should be part of the system of government.

But if we are to have a monarchy and a system that works on this, we might be better to look at which child should become monarch. Because the current heir isn’t fit for the post.

His views on architecture and organic foods are impractical and come from a world of one who is priveledged enough to not have to decide between skiing holidays and organic shopping. I don’t mind the priveledge, but he seems to have no idea about how the rest of us live. His views on the environment are hypocritical.

Until today, I had him down as a harmless crank who could live a life with an arts-and-crafts viewpoint on the world. It didn’t matter a jot. No government was going to change policy on 2-for-£5 chickens or insist on Poundbury-like construction everywhere.

But today, he addressed the EU parliament, and praised it for its sterling work on climate change and said “Determined and principled leadership has never been more needed. Surely this is just the moment in history for which the European Union was created”.

There’s a political party that enjoys considerable support in the UK that would like us to leave the EU. There are plenty of people in the 2 main parties that would like us to leave. To get involved in this is not some issue that we can chalk up to some harmless personal views, but is a political issue. To have such views known, and to be king goes against the principals of a constitutional monarchy.

  1. No comment on Charles, but re: monarchy in general - our president spends a lot of time attending to ceremonial duties, being present in various places to lend them an air of Importance. It’s got to hurt his time to attend to real duties. So, if you ever do go monarch-free, I think we could use your castoff…
