Ubuntu on Virtual PC

Since the demise of my thinkpad, I’ve been looking for an alternative way to run Unix/Linux. This isn’t my bread and butter (I mostly do asp.net) but I might want it to be sometime soon/in the future.
I thought about cheap alternatives to splashing out on a Macbook, and found an article that describes how to run Ubuntu under Virtual PC for Windows. The tutorial works, although it takes a heck of a long time to do. I’ll see how it goes. If it’s too slow and too painful, I’ll just get the Macbook!
