A Tinfoil Hat for Jon Snow

Jon Snow on the Prince Harry story

In an email to subscribers, Snow wrote: “I never thought I’d find myself saying ‘thank God for Drudge’. The infamous US blogger has broken the best kept editorial secret of recent times. Editors have been sworn to secrecy over Prince Harry being sent to fight in Afghanistan three months ago.

“Drudge has blown their cover. One wonders whether viewers, readers and listeners will ever want to trust media bosses again. Or perhaps this was a courageous editorial decision to protect this fine young man?”

No, it was a deal. Keep your mouths shut and you’ll get to come along to take some photos later.

In a debate on Thursday night’s news programme, Snow asked: “Can you think of another country where this could ever happen other than in a totalitarian state?”

Oh, please. Talk about paranoia. Journalists who fly into Iraq with Brown and Bush - do you think they’re allowed to tell their friends where they’re going? Or if not told, are well aware of why such visits are unannounced?

Does Jon Snow really think that news editors could have had it any other way? That somehow they’d have had live feeds of Harry taking on the taleban beamed back to London? That would simply be madness - there would have been a concentrated attack on him and his men. They came up with the best option - he can do his job without a security breach and the journalists can have something to report.

I get concerned whenever the government wants to extend its own powers, but the UK is still pretty far from being a totalitarian state.

I do like the comment from Doris Bonkers:-

“Well done to Channel 4 News…May you long continue to break controversial bits of information that you would only otherwise get online or by pointing your dish at a more democratic country’s satellite.”
