FlyBe send passengers to Dublin
Budget airline Flybe advertised for actors to fly between Norwich and Dublin to boost passenger numbers and avoid a £280,000 commercial penalty.
The airline took the step to avoid a penalty charge from Norwich Airport if it did not carry 15,000 passengers on the route by 31 March.
The airport criticised Flybe for pointlessly damaging the environment.
It’s not pointless, not from FlyBe’s position.
FlyBe, like any business, did their sums: 200 lots of passenger tax + the cost of sending an aircraft over to Dublin twice + some carbon offsets + some ads for free flights is not going to cost you anywhere near £280K. So it makes sense for them to do it.
But why ‘actors’? Couldn’t anybody apply?
Mark,
They didn’t use any actors. That was more of a backup plan if they couldn’t get any passengers. They gave free flights to passengers instead.
