Redwood on Rubbish

John Redwood

Only this Labour government (with a bit of help from its friends, the European Commission), could think up such an unpopular mixture of policies towards recycling and bin emptying. They have produced the trebly toxic package of

1. Fortnightly collection instead of weekly or more frequently
2. Spy cameras on bins coupled with the Enforcement officers to fine you for the wrong kind of rubbish
3. The threat of an additional Bin Tax

The reason for fortnightly collections is simple. There is an EU Landfill Directive that states that councils can dump a certain amount in landfill, and will be fined above that. So councils are carrying out various levels of dumb behaviour to try and meet that directive. As it’s a directive from the EU, the government have to implement it.

Blaming “Only this Labour government” is stretching things. OK, you can blame Labour if you like for not taking us out of the EU, or you can blame Labour for not renegotiating our treaties.

Or to put it another way, unless the Conservatives want to take us out of the EU, or unless the Conservatives want us to renegotiate our treaties, they’d have to have accepted precisely the same directives, and local authorities would be doing exactly the same things.
