Wall*E

Let’s get one thing out of the way first. Wall*E is not a bad movie because of it’s environmental message. Yes, it’s simplistic and way off any science, and there’s quite a lot of preaching in there but there’s quite a lot of films with a bit of preaching in that are still good films.

Wall*E is a bad movie because it’s dull. The first 20 minutes are pretty good, with some really stunning looking animation of Wall*E roaming the Earth, and quite a few laughs, but soon after that, it starts going downhill. The other characters are mostly robots (and the ships computer), but lack either verbal or visual expression, so it’s hard to see them as characters and to take much interest in how they interact, or why they do what they do. There is no drama, no characters develop from where they were at the start. By the time you reach the inevitable grand scene, you really don’t care.

On a positive note, the 5 minute short film that comes with it, Presto, is brilliant.
