Conservative Rail Plan 2

I’ve just noticed another problem with their figures. In the BBC article, they state that London to Birmingham would take just 45 minutes with their new fast rail line. This is an average speed of around 157mph for the 189km journey. This sounds impressive.
I decided to check out french railways, SNCF to see what speeds […]

Conservative Rail Plan

From The BBC:-

The Tories say they would scrap plans for a third runway at Heathrow and build a high-speed rail line instead.
They are proposing to create a new line linking London St Pancras, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds - saying it would cut Heathrow flights by 66,000 a year.
then…
He (BAA’s spokesman) said flights to […]

Bail Out Plan Defeated

US Congress voted it down 228 to 205. It’s close enough that someone will now renegotiate it, throw a few extra sweetners in and get it passed, though.

Richard Stallman on Cloud Computing

From The Guardian
But Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and creator of the computer operating system GNU, said that cloud computing was simply a trap aimed at forcing more people to buy into locked, proprietary systems that would cost them more and more over time.
The thing is, Stallman’s dead wrong about this. They […]

Boris on Wifi

via The BBC:
Mayor Boris Johnson has said he wanted London to become “a wi-fi city”, where the internet was available anywhere.
Oh dear. Let’s outline the options that are currently already available for connecting to the internet in central London:-

Wi-fi in cafes/restaurants. For the price of a latte or a Big Mac, you can sit down […]

Passionato Music Store

A new classical music store has just opened selling classical music in MP3 format called Passionato.  Emusic already does classical music, but is quite limited as it only carries independent labels like Naxos. So, if you’re quite picky about recordings (Naxos recordings are good, but not generally the most critically acclaimed), emusic isn’t for you.
The […]

Workplace Bullying

via the BBC:-
A TUC study of almost 3m adults also suggested that bullying was more prevalent in public sector jobs.

Specifically, it’s about double, according to the report.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: “This level of bullying at work is completely unacceptable.”

So, presumably, the unions will stop making such a big fuss when someone suggests privatising […]

Heroes Series 1

I would have written an earlier review of Heroes but:-

I missed some episodes (I saw 1-4, but none after).
Until recently, the DVD box set was too pricey.

It’s a simply brilliant series, and well worth your time if you get a chance to catch it. There’s very little other writing around to match this (House is […]

Adsense Email Equivalent Request

I currently use Adsense on this blog, and I’d like to be able to put ads on some emails I’m sending out in a project (it’s very much not spamming). As far as I’m aware, Adsense doesn’t support this, but are there companies who have some way of embedding ads with a similar click-through payment?

Google Chrome

Just a quick note to say that I’ve been trying out Google Chrome, and so far it’s pretty impressive, especially from a web developer perspective, and particularly because as it’s webkit based, I can uninstall Safari.
It’s got a DOM inspector built in, a javascript debugger, and a “stats for nerds” feature about memory use by […]
