The Indefensible Licence Fee…

Sir Michael Lyons (Chairman of the BBC Trust) makes a defence of the BBC keeping all of the BBC in a Times piece called “Don’t make the BBC share it’s licence fee”. There’s a rather interesting statement in it:-

PSB, is at risk. Does it matter? Yes, not least because the creative industry plays such an important role in the British economy.

and later…

The BBC delivers £5billion a year for the creative economy - can it deliver more? We think the answer is yes.

Public service broadcasting makes a contribution to the economy? Whoopee! Up until now, we were always told that the reason that we needed a licence fee was because there were things that the market couldn’t provide that had to be done through the licence fee. But it seems that now, the BBC is even making a profit over and above the cost of the license fee.

I’d like to know from Michael Lyons why I’m not seeing back my share of that £5 billion that they’re earning.
