More Alcohol News

From the Daily Mail (also The Times)…

Leading supermarkets are still selling some cut-price booze for less than bottled water, research has found.

Discounted own-brand alcohol goes on sale for as little as 23p a can, according to charity Addaction.

There’s one problem with this survey (I have the numbers that Addaction used). It’s comparing unbranded lagers with branded bottled water. Addaction compared supermarket own lager with the likes of Evian. When you replace that with a fair comparison of Sainsbury’s own bottled water, the water is 9p cheaper (and you get a 2l bottle of it). Likewise, Evian costs less than K cider.

Just something to watch next time someone starts throwing this argument into the mix of reasons for more restrictions on people’s freedom.

  1. That K cider sounds like good value!

  2. Not that I necessarily agree with it, but the point is a more general one of an untaxed product being sold cheaper than a heavily taxed one.
