Will Hutton on Weight

On food buying
Try to buy a remotely healthy or low-calorie meal in a station, football stadium or most pubs and restaurants and you might as well cry for the moon. It is no surprise that obesity has doubled in the past 25 years and by 2050 we will be mainly an obese society.

I didn’t start […]

Wispa

In the interests of informing my readership, I decided to have myself a Wispa today. Contrary to some reports, this isn’t New Wispa, but just as good as it used to be.

It’s like another world…

The Englishman pointed out a review of a restaurant in The Times by AA Gill.
I’ve eaten out a few times in London. I had high expectations, which were rarely met. I’ve spent out 3 times what a meal in rural France would cost, and not had the same quality. I’m annoyed that unlike in the […]

Some Local Cheese

If you’re not from around these parts, then this is probably worth skipping over.
I recently bought some of Ceri’s Cheese from the farmers market at the Swindon Designer Village. The Malmesbury Mold is a delicious hard cheese. I’m still not certain about the seven pepper soft cheese as I’ve only had it once. Her website […]

Windsor

I’ve been doing some work in Windsor. Very nice place to work. Lots of lovely shops like Montezumas and Carluccios. I suspect it’s got the highest density of coffee places per capita (I’ve tried about 1/4 of them so far) in the UK.
I’m looking out for scenes to photograph, and I’ll post ‘em as I […]

Cooking in Schools

I was listening to Prue Leith on Radio 4’s PM show talking about how important it is for children to be taught cooking in schools (along with various other health groups).
Only trouble is that it doesn’t really add up. I know plenty of people who were taught cooking at school and they don’t cook much […]

Blackberrying and Sorbet

Does anyone go blackberrying any more? It’s something that I always remember doing as a child, and always remember lots of other people doing it too. I just don’t see anyone much doing it nowadays.
I took a pleasant walk on sunday in Swindon along the route of the old railway track from Old Town to […]

Good Restaurants=Home Made Ice-Cream

How do you tell a good place to eat, before you go?
I was thinking about the pubs/restaurants that I really like. The ones that I’ll travel 20-30 miles to go and eat in. The advice I was once given was that you should look for places not with laminated menus, but something handwritten or on […]

Hellmann ’s Sandwich Competition

Hellman’s are hosting a competition for the public to create the greatest sandwich. It doesn’t say anywhere, but I presume that one of the ingredients has to be Hellman’s.
It’s like deciding the world’s greatest movie, but only being allowed those with Ben Affleck.
Hellmann’s is my last choice in mayonnaise. If you want off the […]

Los Gatos, Swindon

Had a social with Sean Wilson of Money Swindon last night, on his recommendation of the Los Gatos tapas restaurants on Wood Street, Swindon.
Seemed like a good place. Good atmosphere and some nice nibbles. My chat with the owner was very encouraging. He’s obviously interested in doing it right with decent ingredients.
