Tim’s Little Oscar Quiz

A bit of fun…
1. Which 1992 film received a nomination which gave away the plot twist?
2. Who is the only actor to have won 2 Oscars for the same performance?
3. Which director didn’t collect his Oscar in person because he was playing clarinet that night?

Terminator Trivia

Channel Five were showing The Terminator on Friday night. I haven’t seen it in a while, and it’s a great perennial that I can’t resist watching, like Where Eagles Dare and Casablanca.
I decided to check what "trivia" there was for it. It’s got one I’ve never heard before:-
"O.J.Simpson was considered for the role of the […]

Honda do Tron

Tron’s not a great movie, but the light cycles sequence was very cool.

Public Art

Wat Tyler has a piece on State Funding of the Arts
Sir Nicholas Hytner: "There is not much difference between the patronage bestowed on Mozart by Emperor Josef II and what the Arts Council and the Department for Media, Culture and Sport do for arts organisations like the National Theatre today.
‘Whether you are talking about 18th-century […]

Nomination for Worst Movie Ever

nourishing obscurity is accepting nominations for the worst movie ever.
There are some good rules. Cinema release, not deliberately designed to be bad.
My immediate thought was to nominate Showgirls, Paul Verhoeven’s terrible movie about Vegas. The problem is that Showgirls is redeemed by being so trashy as to be enjoyable.
Instead, I’m going to give it to […]

Martin Scorsese

I’m a big fan of his work*, so this shouldn’t have made me laugh, but did.
Incidentally, Kubrick and Hitchcock never won one either, so he’s in good company.

Plan 9 from Google Video

I only recently discovered that Ed Wood’s craptacular Plan 9 from Outer Space is in the public domain. It was made in 1959, so should still be under copyright. However, I think that the US copyright used to require renewal, and I presume that someone thought it had no value.
It’s often considered as one of […]

Lady Vengeance

Film 4 are showing Chan Wook-Park’s Lady Vengeance on Thursday night.
I’m going to set my recorder, because Chan Wook-Park made a film in 2003 called Oldboy which was simply one of the most stunning movies I’ve seen in a long time. Rarely do I catch a film that is so intelligent and visually arresting. You […]

Movie Location Finder

I’ve been given a cool site (thanks Skuds!). It allows you to check out either where a movie was filmed, or what has been filmed in a particular location.
http://www.wheredidtheyfilmthat.co.uk/
That said, there are omissions. There’s nothing for Swindon, and yet the town hasn’t had 1 but 2 Bond films shot here (and not much else). Incidentally, […]
