Front 242

In my teenage years, I used to read the Melody Maker, and one of the bands that they’d mention were Front 242, an electronic band from Belgium.
At the time, I never heard them, but a post by Croydonian got me googling, and I came across this mighty track.

(I’m now looking for other great Euro tracks)

Christmas Preparations

Along with the tree, the mince pies and the bottle of Baileys, I thoroughly recommend having yourself a copy of Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift For You, his christmas album featuring a bunch of “Wall of Sound” artists.
Personally, I particularly like The Crystals’ Santa Claus is Coming To Town, Darlene Love’s White Christmas, and The […]

Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle

Bands want slice of profit from resold gig tickets
Radiohead, Robbie Williams and Arctic Monkeys joined calls yesterday for a levy to be added to tickets resold on the web to allow musicians to claw back some of the profits made by touts and fans.
What a bunch of ingrates. Not enough to have millions in […]

Radiohead’s Honesty Box

So, it looks like Radiohead are going to sell their new album “In Rainbows” by asking fans to pay what they think it’s worth. It sounds like a crazy idea, but I think there’s some merit in it.
In the era of digital copying, almost any song can be acquired from almost anywhere (in essence for […]

Opera at the Wyvern

The Wyvern Theatre in Swindon has been closed for some time after asbestos was found, and is about to reopen.
The good news is that there’s some opera on. Normally, I’d expect something well known like La Boheme or Turandot, and often sung in English, but instead we’re getting the bold choice of Bellini’s I Capuleti […]

25 Years of the CD

To celebrate, I thought I’d reveal the first CD I bought. I bought 2 CDs at the same time, so both deserve a mention.
One was Love by Aztec Camera, which is a rather good album, and still worth a listen. The other was Peepshow by Siouxsie and the Banshees, bought on the strength of “Peek-a-Boo” […]

Tony Wilson RIP

Thanks for all the music…

The White Stripes

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to buy some White Stripes, because I think they’re a great band. There’s at least 3 singles that are in the best singles of the decade so far - Fell in Love with a Girl, Seven Nation Army and Doorbell.
So I’m glad that Skuds highlighted that […]

U2 Songs in Church

I caught a BBC report about how U2 songs are now being used in Eucharist services. The congregation were singing Pride (in the Name of Love) from their album The Unforgettable Fire.
Yet it is specifically a song about not Jesus, but Martin Luther King. I was into U2, and the face on the back of […]

Getting Physical

I’ve been going to the gym for some weeks now, and apart from a brief break due to a very heavy cold, I’m doing OK. It’s all helped by the large screens showing pop videos of disco tracks sampling 80s MOR tracks by Steve Winwood or Don Henley.
And this is a good thing. You wouldn’t […]
