The White Stripes

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to buy some White Stripes, because I think they’re a great band. There’s at least 3 singles that are in the best singles of the decade so far - Fell in Love with a Girl, Seven Nation Army and Doorbell.
So I’m glad that Skuds highlighted that […]

U2 Songs in Church

I caught a BBC report about how U2 songs are now being used in Eucharist services. The congregation were singing Pride (in the Name of Love) from their album The Unforgettable Fire.
Yet it is specifically a song about not Jesus, but Martin Luther King. I was into U2, and the face on the back of […]

Getting Physical

I’ve been going to the gym for some weeks now, and apart from a brief break due to a very heavy cold, I’m doing OK. It’s all helped by the large screens showing pop videos of disco tracks sampling 80s MOR tracks by Steve Winwood or Don Henley.
And this is a good thing. You wouldn’t […]

Say Goodbye to Streetcred

Dire Straits never did it for me. Not very exciting. I like Mark Knopfler’s soundtrack to Local Hero, though.
But Pootergeek has a good post about music and how people get bound up in "what’s cool" and following the herd. Q magazine had a whole issue about "guilty pleasures" which included "Don’t Stop Movin’" by S […]

Chart Pondering and The Beatles

A few weeks ago, Skuds had a ponder about the charts. In particular, the changes in the system that means that there is no requirement for physical product to be sold:-
if someone downloads, say, the new Amy Winehouse album which includes a couple of singles in the charts, would that count as one sale for […]

Clarinet Request

I’m keen to learn to play the clarinet, and I’m wondering if any readers have one that they’re doing nothing with, or if they know one for sale.
I want to get a reasonable instrument. Not very cheap, nor very expensive, but something that I can play a decent note on.
Let me know if you can […]

April Falls

Yippee! The Fall are going on tour. OK, in March mostly, but that doesn’t work.
After a quiet year (the first with no new material released since 1977) they’re making up for it. A new album in February,  a supporting tour and in June, MES’ autobiography is released.

The End of the Record Shop

Martin Kettle in the Guardian mourns the demise of Tower
I really don’t understand why. Tower, and the likes of Virgin and HMV won’t get any of my tears when they’re gone. Since Amazon and CD Wow came along, I’ve had no need for them. They’re little more than music supermarkets selling commodity products, and are […]

Arts Sponsorship

Just picked up an Oliver Kamm piece on arts sponsorship
Unlike Stephen, I have a blind spot about ballet, and never attend it (though I admire the ballet music of Stravinsky and many others). But I believe I should contribute to the public provision of ballet if other taxpayers do, because the alternative is a system […]

Predictions for 2007

First, some that I think are certs…
1. Brown will be PM. Johnson to be deputy. John Reid the contender.
2. There will be no general election.
3. Robbie Williams next album will be a disaster.
4. Windows Vista will not do very well, but the new version of Mac OSX will not be seen as a big improvement. […]
