Conservative Rail Plan 2

I’ve just noticed another problem with their figures. In the BBC article, they state that London to Birmingham would take just 45 minutes with their new fast rail line. This is an average speed of around 157mph for the 189km journey. This sounds impressive.
I decided to check out french railways, SNCF to see what speeds […]

Conservative Rail Plan

From The BBC:-

The Tories say they would scrap plans for a third runway at Heathrow and build a high-speed rail line instead.
They are proposing to create a new line linking London St Pancras, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds - saying it would cut Heathrow flights by 66,000 a year.

He (BAA’s spokesman) said flights to […]

Coastguard Strike

From the BBC:-
Holidaymakers and boaters have been urged to take extra care as coastguard staff go on a 48-hour strike over pay. Approximately 700 Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) staff, will strike from Saturday to Monday.
You could just go to one of the beaches that has RNLI lifeguards. You can enjoy a nice paddle in […]

Single Point of Failure

Eurostar Warns of Strikes

Eurostar warns of cross-Channel rail disruption ahead of proposed strike action by railway workers in Belgium on Tuesday.
The company said it may be unable to run services between Brussels and the UK if the 24-hour strike goes ahead.
One of a number of reasons why I prefer to drive or fly […]

Google Static Maps

Google Static Maps Launched
A jolly useful feature, this. Google Maps are normally known for their super duper javascript/ajax maps that you can move around, but they now offer maps that can be put on websites as static images, like the one I created below showing Swindon’s best known landmark.

Norwich Airport

FlyBe send passengers to Dublin
Budget airline Flybe advertised for actors to fly between Norwich and Dublin to boost passenger numbers and avoid a £280,000 commercial penalty.
The airline took the step to avoid a penalty charge from Norwich Airport if it did not carry 15,000 passengers on the route by 31 March.
The airport […]

I’m not 64, but

I’m looking for a cottage to rent on the Isle of Wight, somewhere that accepts small, well behaved dogs.
Any recommendations?

Terminal 5

I’m glad to see that BA have exclusive use of Terminal 5. It means that I know how to avoid getting fingerprinted - I won’t fly with BA.

UK Free Wifi Map

I’m trying to put together a map of free/cheap wifi sites in the UK. Current progress is here.
Cheap might include getting wi-fi when you buy a coffee or something. In other words, you don’t have to pay for a £5 credit card fee.
So far, I’ve only got a few sites in Wiltshire, but if people […]

St Pancras

I stumbled across an article about St Pancras station today, and I’m puzzled by something written in it:-
St Pancras was chosen as an international terminus in part because it is a few minutes’ walk from King’s Cross station which has connections to Edinburgh, Newcastle and the east coast as well as six London Underground lines.
Who […]
