St Pancras

I stumbled across an article about St Pancras station today, and I’m puzzled by something written in it:-
St Pancras was chosen as an international terminus in part because it is a few minutes’ walk from King’s Cross station which has connections to Edinburgh, Newcastle and the east coast as well as six London Underground lines.
Who […]

Christmas Trains

Libby Purves in The Times
So that’s it. No trains. Precious few buses. Everybody stranded, unless they drive. So they will drive, and the Department for Transport’s fatuous Act on CO2 campaign will ring hollow once again.
No it won’t. From an environmental point of view, I think the government is doing exactly the right thing.
It’s a […]

Disappointing Tourist Spots

From The Telegraph:-
The Eiffel Tower is "frustratingly overcrowded and overpriced" while Stonehenge is "just a load of old rocks" according to a report which has named the top ten most disappointing tourist spots.
This is one of the things about famous (and often deservedly so) places. They are overcrowded. Lots of people want to see them. […]

NPE Maps Addon

I’ve written a little utility using the NPE Maps data, a great project designed to geocode the UK. I needed it for something experimental, but I’m happy to share my utility.
The idea of the utility is to take each of the records that is in the NPE Maps outward + 1st inward database and create […]

An Eventful Few Days…

I’ve had an eventful couple of days this week.
I was driving to Windsor on Wednesday morning when my alternator decided to give up, just after J11 on the M4 and before I could get to the hard shoulder. Thankfully, a driver stopped and helped me move it off the road. The AA came and were […]

Apartment Carabeo

I’ve built a small website for a friend for his holiday apartment in Nerja in Southern Spain. It’s a 2-bed apartment and there’s still availabiility. The website address is http://www.carabeo.co.uk.
The site was built using Wordpress, generally considered more as a blogging platform, but it serves well as a site building platform, especially when there is […]

Annual MOT Tests Under Review

From The Herald…
The annual MoT test for cars is expected to be replaced by a two-year check under radical government plans to reduce red tape and bureaucracy.
I’m all in favour of reducing red tape and bureaucracy, of allowing people to get on with their own lives. But of all the regulations that could be picked, the […]

Gmail App

For some time now, I’ve been using my Nokia smartphone to read my Gmail. Google already made it easier, having a specially lightweight page for mobile browsers to keep it nice and quick.
They’ve now released a specific application called Gmail App  which allows you to retrieve the mail on the phone, and because it’s a […]

Favourite Things about Paris

Following a discussion about Rodin over at Ellee Seymour’s place, I’ve decided to do a quick brain dump of some of my favourite things about Paris.

Rodin Museum. Over on the left bank, not too heavily visited and quite compact for a museum. The gardens are lovely too.
The Musee D’Orsay. Great impressionist art in the setting […]

More on SUVs

For anyone who hates the 4×4/SUV/Chelsea Tractor, it’s worth reading Janice Turner’s piece from a few weeks ago about how the "ban the SUV" campaign makes no sense from any rational sense. The hatred out there is about something other than environmental issues.
