Ubuntu 7.10 in Virtual PC 2007

I’d prefer to run a proper dual-boot environment, but it’s quite a setup, so I tried setting up Ubuntu on Virtual PC 2007 using this guide.
The guide is about spot-on. The only two suggestions are:-

Increase the memory to 1GB.
Once the process is running, change it in Task Manager to use 1 processor as it seems […]

The Mac…

… is Going Back.
Replacing it will be a Windows/Ubuntu dual-boot.
Your mileage may vary with it.

Filezilla for Ubuntu

I knew it was under Beta, so did some googling and hey presto! the best open source FTP client is available for Linux with just a hop, skip and a sudo apt-get away:-
sudo apt-get install filezilla

Lightweight Linux

I needed to set up a machine with 3 simple purposes:-

Browse the net
Flash
Play video (DIVX)

Linux can do all of these, so Linux it was. I’d normally have used Ubuntu, but it’s an old Dell 2500 machine, and I wanted something light that would do all those things better.
I tried Puppy Linux, which has a good […]

Ubuntu Linux on a Thinkpad T41

I recently bought an old Thinkpad T41 to run Linux. I don’t need a particularly powerful machine for Linux needs, but my Dell laptop had a power supply that was glowing a little too hot for me to be comfortable.
Here’s the installation instructions in full:-

Download the ISO image from the Ubuntu Linux website.
Insert blank CD […]

Printing with Feisty

I don’t use a printer much, but need it for printing the odd document, and I also like all-in-one printers for things like copying of documents that I need.
I opted for an HP Photosmart 2575. There’s quite a lot of cheap all-in-ones, but the clincher for me was that it had an ethernet connection, which […]

Ubuntu Feisty Beta RALINK problems

I’ve been running Ubuntu Feisty for a week or so now, and thought I’d get the first beta. I was expecting a straightforward install.
In the beta, something called network manager has been added. This is a good addition, except that it’s incompatible with the RALINK chipset drivers (which I use).
If you’re getting problems with RALINK, […]

Ubuntu Feisty

My install of Ubuntu Edgy has lasted about as long as the Sex Pistols time with A&M.
Feisty seems OK so far. It is beta, so I’m expecting problems. Most notably, I get a few browser crashes which are getting reported. I don’t know if the installer updated Flash in the process (I know it’s […]

Postcard from Edgy

I’m not currently doing much on my Ubuntu/Inspiron 2500 setup, so it seemed an ideal time to move up from Dapper to Edgy. I should have remembered the old adage about "if it ain’t broke…"
I’m now getting display problems, which reading around sound like something to do with xorg.conf. Anyway. the good news is that […]

Ubuntu Easy Codec Installation

One of the features coming in the new version of Ubuntu (codenamed Feisty Fawn) is easy CoDec installation.
For those who don’t know what a CoDec is, it stands for Coder/Decoder. When you want to play something like an mp3 or avi file, the media player uses a CoDec to read the file and translate it […]
